Jerry Rawlings didn’t die of COVID-19, says family


Contrary to media reports, the bereaved family of late Jerry Rawlings said  the former president died after brief illness.

In a statement released  by Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, he said that the deceased did not die of coronavirus complications as widely reported.

“It is with deep sadness that the family of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd), informs the general public that the former President of the Republic, passed away on Thursday morning after a short illness.

“The family requests privacy at this difficult moment. Details of funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” the statement said.

Rawlings, seized power twice in military coups but went on to bring democratic rule to the West African country in 1992.

Pesidency said Rawlings had died on Thursday morning, but provided no further details.

Before his death, he was  the African Union envoy to Somalia
