Tradition: Why Ooni of Ife may not see his new born baby for six months

It is no longer news that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and his wife, Olori Silekunola, finally welcomed their first child together since they got married.

It was reported that the top rated monarch announced the news of his son’s arrival on Wednesday.

However, amid the excitement of the prince’s arrival, palace sources have now revealed that the monarch will not be allowed to set eyes on his son any time soon, KemiAshefon reports.

It was gathered that the reason for the development has a lot to do with longstanding tradition, that forbids an Ooni from seeing the newborn or the mother until the natural hair of the child has been completely scraped off, and this could be in about six months time.

In addition, the sources disclosed that some rites would be performed before the heir to the throne is brought to the palace, and his arrival would be widely celebrated.

“Then, some rites would have been performed and he would now be brought to the palace amidst pomp and pageantry. No Ooni sees newborn babies, they are given birth to outside the palace.”
