Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Nigeria has declared June 12 as Democracy Day.
This is in respect of the winner of the 1993 Presidential election, M.K.O Abiola, who won the poll adjudged to be the fairest poll in Nigeria’s history.
The President also awards Abiola with posthumous Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
Buhari also conferred Grand Commander of Niger (GCON) to Abiola’s Vice President, Babagana Kinginbe, and former human right lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, for his doggedness in the fight for rule of law and democracy.
