The non-academic workers of Nigerian universities, have resolved to embark on a one-week warning strike nationwide from August 19 to 23.

The unions that want to down tool are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The unions said in Abuja on Friday that the strike was necessitated by the refusal of the Federal Government to attend to their demands after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum given to the authorities, Punch reports.

This development was contained in a letter signed by SSANU President and Chairman of the Joint Action Committee, Mr Samson Ugwoke, and General Secretary, Mr Peters Adeyemi.

The demands of the unions included the payment of their earned allowances, the university staff schools’ matter, and the renegotiation of the 2019 Federal Government of Nigeria’s agreement with the unions. The unions instructed all members and institutions to comply with the warning strike from Monday or face sanctions.

The planned one-week strike of SSANU and NASU is coming after about five months when the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its four-month-old strike in February 2019.

The SSANU and NASU had embarked on a nationwide strike on December 4, 2017, following the failure of the government to grant their demands.
