If the claim by Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike on an assassination attempt on his life in Port Harcourt on Saturday is anything to go, then a new twist may have crept into his increasingly bitter relationship with his predecessor and now Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
Wike said that he escaped assassination Saturday as soldiers and men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, allegedly on the convoy of Amaechi attacked his (Wike) convoy in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Media Aide to the governor, Simeon Nwakaudu, said in a statement that ‘the ugly incident” happened at Nwanja junction, Trans Amadi Road when the governor was inspecting ongoing road construction job in the area.
The statement said the governor’s out rider was “hit by the convoy and the Policemen in the Pilot car attacked.”
Wike according to the statement was not hurt and continued with his inspection of the road project after the incident.
It would be recalled that Wike had recently asked for the removal of the Federal SARS as presently constituted in the state while blaming the anti-robbery squad for many killings in the state.
The latest development may have also lend credence to the frosty relationship between the governor and the Federal SARS.
The role of the Nigerian Army in this development, appears strange as Wike had before now, maintain good relationship with the Army.
Amaechi was however in Lagos on Saturday to reel out his two yearsachievements in office as Minister of Trannsportation.
