Customers to Pay N6 Per SMS Banks’ Transaction Alert from Today
Customers of banks will now incur a charge of N6 for each SMS transaction alert, effective today.
This change follows a recent increase in telecommunications rates approved by the Federal Government, which has led banks to adjust their SMS fees. The cost per message has risen by 50%, from N4 to N6.
Several banks have notified their customers about this new SMS rate through emails. For example, Guaranty Trust Bank Limited sent an email titled “Increase in SMS Transaction Alert Fee,” stating: “Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that starting Thursday, May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from N4 to N6 per message. This adjustment is a result of the recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by our service providers.”
“Please be aware that transaction alerts are essential for monitoring and managing your account activities.
“If you would rather not receive transaction alerts via SMS, you can change your preferences by filling out the transaction alert form on our website.
“Please note that SMS alerts sent to international phone numbers may incur higher charges.”
