There are fears of more Coronavirus cases in Osun State after the state recorded three of the total nine confirmed cases announced on Tuesday by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
The state government moved the three new cases yesterday to the State Specialist Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo, according to Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ismail Omipidan.
There are now five Coronavirus cases in the state.
The new cases, it was learnt, came from the tests conducted on the citizens who returned from the West Coast last weekend.
They were initially not allowed into the country at the Ogun State border until Governor Adegboyega Oyetola came to their rescue.
They were subsequently put in isolation and their samples taken for the test.
A source said the Osun State government has raised the alarm that there is likely to be more cases of COVID-19 in the state.
He said with three positive cases recorded of 27 returnees tested, there could be more cases. Results of 103 returnees are still expected.
The source said: “Before now, we had just two cases and one of the cases is a returnee from the UK. We also had 127 returnees from Cote d’Ivoire, we have screened 24 and three of them are positive. We are expecting 103 which we don’t know what will happen.
“If there are more cases, Osun State will have a serious situation to contend with. The isolation centre is less than 50-bed capacity and we want to appreciate the government on the lockdown of two states and Abuja. There should be a total lockdown of the country to help curb the spread.”
He therefore appealed to the Federal Government to extend more assistance to the state to help it curb the spread of the virus.
Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode said she didn’t know whether the new cases were from the isolation centre in Ejigbo.
She said: “I can assure you that they took all the samples from the isolated people in Ejigbo and the result will trickle in because the laboratory is attending to lots of samples. I can’t confirm whether they are from the isolation center in Ejigbo but as soon as I get the information on that I will inform you.”
